As a child Amelia lived with her grandparents for half the year, and the other half lived with her parents. She had a rougher childhood for her father was an alcoholic and spent most of their little money that they earned on alcohol. When she was in the seventh grade her family moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she saw her first plane ever.
Amelia went to a private college to be a nurse, the interest of flying a plane didn't really interest her until the 1920's.

Amelia Earhart is the most famous of this group of aviatrixes, but Neta Snook, the one who taught Earhart how to fly, is often overlooked.
Neta Snook had been flying for four years, having made a living as a test pilot and a barnstormer, when she met Earhart in December of 1920 at California’s Kinner Field. She later described her first impression of Earhart: “I’ll never forget the day she and her father came to the field. I liked her on sight.”[1] On January 3, 1921, Earhart took her first flying lesson with Snook. Already equipped with an impressive knowledge of aviation and an eagerness to fly, Earhart became Snook’s most famous student. |
Amelia is a leader because she had to overcome a rough childhood and deal with coming from a rough household. Instead of just giving up on life she pulled through and made history.
